Rules & Tips:
- Wheel, tools and stool must be returned clean and undamaged by agreed date.
- IMPORTANT: Only materials provided by the studio are approved for firing.
- Additional materials may be purchased from the Studio including Clay & Underglazes.
- Wheels must be set-up in a safe indoor space and not be exposed to the elements.
- Wheels must be turned off and unplugged when not in use.
- Wheels should not be used by others not trained nor un-supervised by renter *especially children
- Tools and supplies provided by the studio should be cleaned regularly after use, and should not be left to soak in water or left with clay on surfaces as this can damage and erode tools, batts, wheel head, undercarriage and surfaces.
- All clean-up should be done with a damp sponge and extra moisture wiped away.
- Depending on location, we advise using a tarp on certain floor surfaces under your wheel such as wood or carpet.
- We advise using a bucket system for your clay water as we do in the studio.
- Do not wash clay waste down indoor plumbing. instead, collect in a bucket and designate a spot outside where you can safely dispose of clay water.
- Save your reclaim & practise wedging it.
- Clay laundry should be washed in a bucket of water and hung to dry. Dispose of clay water outdoors.
- Avoid dry clay build up on clothing, foot ware, and work surfaces. Dry clay dust that becomes airborne is easily breathed in without notice. As the particles are too fine to expel, long term exposure to ceramic dust can lead to very serious health problems. This is the largest risk factor in working with clay, both in the studio and at home which is easily managed by keeping things clean as you go.
- Clay safe! ;)
Choose your Clay Body:
Clay types will vary acording to what is in stock at the studio. You will receive 1 bag of clay with your at home package, let us know which clay you'd like from the following.
- 542 Grey Stoneware - Smooth and fires to a warm tan like grey. Suitable for wheel and mid sized handbuilding
- Dark Granite - New to the studio, gorgeous contemporary clay body to leave naked, or do simple resist decoration. Very smooth for throwing, porcelain like in behavior
- Bright White - Is our preferred porcelain when we're throwing our white work. Smooth and forgiving.
- Mid Smoothstone Speck (OUT OF STOCK) - Stoneware, similar to the body used in the last session but with granular specks embedded in the clay which wil darken in the glaze firing. (limmited, only 3 bags available at this time)
- 540 Black Stoneware (OUT OF STOCK) - Very smooth body, fires to a dark chocolate deep brown colour
If desired, additional clay can be purchased from the studio during your rental.
*Only materials approved by the studio can be used with our equipment. A lot can go wrong when working with clay ~ adding unknown clay bodies & materials into the mix can be problematic. We have a firm policy to only use materials that are purchased and provided by the studio for our in class sessions as well as for this take home option.
A rental contract will be sent following your purchase and must be signed before we release your kit.
